Just imagine becoming the way you used to be as a very young child, before you understood the meaning of any word, before opinions took over your mind. The real you is loving, joyful, and free. The real you is just like a flower, just like the wind, just like the ocean, just like the sun.”
– Don Miguel Ruiz

I meditate to access my inner calm, my connection to something greater than myself, my soul, my intuition, my creativity and the infinite capacity of my heart.  Meditation has fundamentally improved every aspect of my life including sleep, health, career and relationships. It is my great wish to offer meditation so that it may benefit as many people as possible.

“Inhale, exhale, be free.”

I meditate because it allows me to put down my to-do lists and be fully present. With consistent practice, I learned how to create space between me and my thoughts.  I began to witness my life as an observer, and with that I cultivated a practice of compassion and empathy for myself and for others.  I noticed over time that the little things that used to bother me don't bother me anymore because meditation has given me freedom and space from reaction.  I am able to surrender to the present moment without defining myself by my past mistakes or living in fear of what may happen in the future.  Meditation is a powerful tool, and I believe that everyone can find gratitude and freedom and grace in the face of challenge through practice.

“Peace comes when our hearts are open like the sky, vast as the ocean” – Jack Kornfield

I never would have ever thought I would be a meditator. The typical place for my mind has always been right up there, amongst the clouds - floating from one thought to the next and the next without any rhyme or reason. So imagine my surprise when I sat for my first meditation class and found not just space (because of course I’ve always been a little spacey) but stillness. 20 minutes felt like 2. I didn’t know where the time went, but I felt a warmth in my heart that let me know that I had magically accessed a place in my soul that radiates pure joy, love, goodness, and light. And so I meditate. To find that place not only when I sit but when I stand and when I walk within this world. We all have this place within our souls and it can be accessed any time. The more we practice, the easier it is to find. Namaste.

“O Nobly born, O you of glorious origins, remember your radiant true nature, the essence of mind. Trust it. Return to it. It is home.”
– Tibetan Book of the Dead

I was “one of those people” who thought not only am I “bad” at meditation, but would never be able to practice it. My first time on the cushion, I felt like my thoughts literally exploded! I am grateful I had a lot of support to stick with it and practice in a way that worked for me. Ultimately, this led to a desire for a daily practice and then a desire to teach this to others. The practice has greatly enhanced my ability to be at ease with myself by sorting out thoughts that are not helpful. We really can choose how and what we think. Meditation is the doorway into meeting your radiant true nature and compassionate wisdom.

"Quiet the mind and the soul will speak"   – Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati

Meditation is an experience from within, which opens the opportunity to become present and harmonious with our true self.  What I have found from meditation is quiet, balance and awareness. I try to cultivate awareness by "watching" my thoughts and feelings. Out of awareness comes silence. Silence is not silent. Go within every day and you will not be disappointed.

“Some people have a mistaken idea that all thoughts disappear through meditation and we enter a state of blankness. There certainly are times of great tranquility when concentration is strong and we have few, if any, thoughts. But other times, we can be flooded with memories, plans or random thinking. It's important not to blame yourself.” – Sharon Salzberg

I began meditating consistently about 4 years ago as I was going through some major changes in my life. It is through this practice of meditation that I learned how to respond to events and thoughts rather than react. And while my practice is not "perfect." what I have also learned is that it doesn't need to be. Returning to my breathe allows me to be compassionate with myself, which then allows me to be more compassionate with others. I have more awareness around kindness and joy in my life, allowing the traumas and travails of daily life to have less power over me.

“Life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.” -Charles R. Swindoll

I began my meditation and yoga journey as part of my Boston Marathon Training over 17 years ago.  As a Buddhist, I fully embrace yoga and meditation because of the alignment of these practices with buddhist philosophy. Meditation is a calming presence in my active daily life.  The practice allows me to meet life’s challenges with grace and presence and to respond with intention.

"Happiness is a continuation of happenings which are not resisted." – Deepak Chopra

I meditate because it gives me space. Space between my thoughts. Space between an event and my reaction to it. Space around my emotions. Space between my habits and living with intention. Meditation helps me feel grounded, free and content.

“When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering like the flame of the candle in a windless place” – Bhagavad Gita

Since incorporating meditation practice to my life I have noticed a strong connection to myself and to the world, more self - confidence and self-awareness, less stress and anxiety, confidence to say no to people, places and things that do not serve me, clarity what I want, willingness to forgive and release those who hurt me, find peace with myself.

“What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.” – Buddha

I found meditation out of a need to slow down and simplify my life.  I practice yoga which is really a merger of the physical and mental mindfulness of living in the moment.  Yoga lead me to meditation and meditation enhances my yoga.  My goal for both these activities is simply to live a happier life.   Meditation is the easiest, least effort activity I know to better your life.   Like all practices, the more you practice the greater the benefit and your meditation practice is really endless.

Mindfulness helps you go home to the present. And every time you go there and recognize a condition of happiness that you have, happiness comes."

I discovered yoga first and then realized the savasana part of class at the end was the big end game! The whip cream on top! And a big part of why I kept going back to yoga classes. I now practice meditation at home and on walks. It helps me figure things out, settle my mind and calm my body.

Meditation takes practice. It's okay to not be perfect at it. Just keep coming back to the practice. We as meditation teachers help guide you. We are learning too. We all learn about ourselves by sitting and noticing what thoughts, sensations and emotions pop up. The practice is just circle back to our breath or a mantra and keep at it. Ultimately we are all seeking happiness. Meditation leads us there.

“Everything you need, your courage, strength, compassion and love; everything you need is already within you.” – Buddha

Meditation has brought a sense of calm, certainty and discipline to my life. When I meditate, I feel fully connected to the present moment, anchored in my own personal truth. Through meditation I have gained valuable insight into my own thoughts and actions.  This has had a positive impact on all the relationships in my life.

"Peace is all around us and within us. Once we learn to touch this peace, we will be healed and transformed. It is not a matter of faith; it is a matter of practice.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

The above quote really says it all about meditation and its benefits when practiced regularly. I have been a regular meditator for about 4 years now and I also enjoy walks/hikes in nature. Nature has very powerful healing elements when combined with meditation, spending these moments in nature helps me reduce any daily stresses and anxiety that daily life may bring about. Breathe in the peace that surrounds you and exhale anything that does not serve that peace.
